Kids' intelligence is inherited from their mothers, study says

Yup! You read it right. According to some studies, kids' intelligence is more likely inherited from their moms than their dads.

This is mainly because of the transmittal of intelligence genes from mothers to their children.

Previous studies have shown most of a child’s intelligence depends on the X chromosome and since women have two X chromosomes, they are twice as likely to transmit characteristics related to intelligence.

Psychologist Jennifer Delgado wrote. "However, several studies revealed that children are more likely to inherit intelligence from the mother because intelligence genes are located on chromosome X."

However, chromosomes and biology are not the only factors.

Delgado also stressed that physical and emotional contact plays a very vital role in developing a child's characteristics. Thus, it leads to the improvement of his/her mental capabilities. And since women or mothers are the ones spending most of the time with the children, they are again playing a bigger role in a child's intelligence progress.

"Of course, this not to say that the relationship with the father should not be as fully developed, just that because of our social structure, including some of the gender stereotypes that still remain, it is usually the mother that spends the most time with her small children," Delgado said.
